Tamara Torres is an Afro-Latinx feminist storyteller and artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Born to Puerto Rican immigrants, her artistic journey is deeply intertwined with her identity as a first-generation American. Tamara's work explores themes of heritage, feminism, and her Afro-Caribbean roots through diverse mediums, including narrative photography collages and abstract “mindscapes.”
She is passionate about storytelling, writing plays and short stories that highlight the experiences of women of color, focusing on community, mental health, and empowerment. Committed to community engagement and activism, Tamara leads workshops, and organizes initiatives like Fábrica De Fotos, a photography club for students and mentors.
Tamara's artwork has been exhibited in cities and internationally such as New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, London, Edinburgh, Vienna, and Rome. In 2022, she was selected as an art ambassador for the International Women's Day event, Art Connects Women, in Dubai.
Through her practice, Tamara aims to navigate the male-dominated world of abstract contemporary art, challenging stereotypes. Symbolism, such as the recurring image of the “shadow person,” highlights themes of societal displacement and the erasure of marginalized voices. Ultimately, she seeks to empower others and amplify those historically overlooked in the art world.
